Hi, I’m Judy. I am a historian of the human sciences focused on nineteenth- and twentieth-century linguistics. I hold degrees in disability studies and the history of science. My work cuts across modern European intellectual history, the history of anthropology, translation studies, labor history, sound studies, and the history of information science. I am interested in the tension between general and specific approaches to language, a key to understanding the history of the human sciences as a whole. Some researchers have focused on essential characteristics shared by all, while others have looked to dynamic markers of human difference. How, why, and to what effect have these priorities changed over time? I have sought to address such questions in projects outlined here and here.
